This essay discusses the relevance of visions to individual learning and management education. Five past presidents of the Academy of Management review their vision making experiences and contemplate the pros and cons of management prophecy. Unlike prescriptive pieces that treat visions as a positive, linear force, the presidents' critical, reflective experiences raise questions about the extent to which visions create learning opportunities.

Key Words: vision • management prophecy • management learning
